Book Reviews

“I was not expecting such a refreshing, compelling, artful collaboration. The storytelling style is organic, seamless, rhythmic. I accompanied Buie from start to finish on her journey of peaks and valleys and damned near flatline, earth shattering intersectional moments of self discovery and struggles of identity the foundation method to owning one’s destiny or path. Woman, Know Thyself~Love Thyself~Grow Thyself. A “Trip” of emotions! I look forward to following the author on her writing journey.
I am an avid reader and although I found this piece, accidentally, I was impressed–more like, caught flatfooted by her unique and engaging use of poetry and prose to tell such a fluid story/biopic.
I can go as far as saying that I would love to see this piece performed on stage or on screen.💞💕” – B. Struggle

“I LOVED! LOVED! LOVED Trini’s Blues! The telling of this, “woman finds herself” journey, is done so creatively and honestly ,and well; that I was immediately immersed, and kept flipping pages until the very end; Yep! “I could not put it down!”. The author combined poetry, prose and story in a way that makes you feel like you have a vested interest in what’s happening as you read each page. You know these people. I felt I was on an adventure with the author that was worth staying on; even though I cried, was angry, felt afraid, and found myself rolling my eyes and shaking my head at some of the choices being made; and places she was taking me, I still laughed and had hope. I still saw beautiful things that were wonderful and good, so I had no choice but to stay on the path and continue the adventure. It was GOOD…VERY GOOD.
I really appreciated what felt like candidness from the author. Calling a thing what it is. Exposing how crazy thoughts will lead to crazy actions and crazy situations. Sometimes Trini’s Blues definitely felt like a cautionary tale in poetic form. I loved this aspect the most. The subtext of “This is what happens when you don’t love yourself” is strong. Those moments are “WOW moments”. I totally connected with the experiences of dealing with life’s mayhem and madness; BA’s unique approach in telling the story of the girl child raising herself, to the rebellious teenager trying to find her place, to the woman who chooses wrong yet again seems brand new. Her use of words and imagery are brilliant. I actually completed the book, and picked it back up soon after to read passages aloud just for the enjoyment of hearing the words on the page. This is definitely a performance piece. Thank you BA Buie! More please!” – Mama Koku
